German Aerospace Center - Earth Observation Center

The Earth Observation Center (EOC) - that consists of the German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) and the Remote Sensing Technology Institute (IMF) - is the core institute of DLR’s earth observation activities.

The German Remote Sensing Data Center (DFD) is engaged in research, product development and providing services based on earth observation data from aircraft and satellite platforms. Results of this work support geo-scientific and environmental research and applications as well as commercial customers and civil security needs. Research projects focus on developing methodologies for generating customized data products as well as on the assimilation of data in models. The major fields of application are land use, the environment, civil security, climate and atmosphere, and geographic information systems.

Prof. Dr. Frithjof Voss Foundation

Since it was established in 2000, the foundation has promoted geographical research and geography as a school subject. It aims to present the practical value of geography to a wider public, in line with modern geography, which addresses pressing societal problems.

After the sudden death (in 2004) of Professor Voss, Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Günter Heinritz, the first President of the German Society for Geography and its honorary president since 2007, assumed the chairmanship. In 2012 he was succeeded by Professor em. Herbert Popp, who is a board member of the Association of Geographers at German Universities (VGDH) and who was the elected representative of the German National Committee within the International Geographical Union.

International Participants

FAO

At present time FAO has great experience in the framework of the “Programme to improve national and regional locust management in CCA”, started in 2011. Its Roadmap includes “Locust issues and disasters better anticipated and mitigated” and more specifically “Develop monitoring and analysis systems”. That involves the development of Locust Geographic Information System (GIS) in CCA to be used both at national and regional levels
